Let's save the world
Caring for the environment is definitely cool right now. If you’re looking for an excuse to go vegan, and can’t bring yourself to tell your family and friends it’s ‘because of the animals’ - tell them it’s for the environment, and I promise everyone will leave you alone.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Before the Flood is a sobering watch for anyone needing a quick refresher on the state of the world right now. Climate change is happening, rising sea levels will take out the world’s lowest lying nations, extreme weather events will only get more frequent and extreme, and everyone’s favourite arctic-dwelling animal, the polar bear, will soon be extinct.
Not the future you imagined? Luckily there’s something you can do to try and reverse this tragedy. Meat production is the single biggest contributor to CO2 emissions - yup, more than all modes of transport combined - and CO2 is the sneaky little bastard which is tearing our ozone layer apart, allowing the heat from the sun to warm up our atmosphere. So it’s simple really - don’t let yourself be a part of the industry which is destroying the environment.
Stop buying and consuming meat.
It’s simple economics really; supply and demand. While you may feel too small to make a difference, you’re actually the one with all the power - and it’s in your pocket. Money makes this world go round, and if you aren’t buying meat, and your friends and family aren’t buying meat, the meat industry will have to cut production. Eventually, it’s my hope, there’ll be no demand at all.
We’re all walking more, we’re all saying no to plastic bags when we don’t need them. So I implore you, the next time you’re faced with a food choice - just say no to meat, and order that vege option. The environment, and the polar bears, will thank you.
